I recently used 6-ply pre-fold diapers and some fabric to make decorative burp cloths. They also serve well as diaper changing pads, bibs when feeding bottles, place mats, and if you run out of cloth diapers, a diaper itself.
I purchased two packs of 6-ply pre-fold diapers. I also purchased various fabric prints. Fat quarters were on sale at my local fabric store, so I purchased two fat quarters for each burp cloth. You could also purchase 1/2 yard of fabric for each burp cloth.
Wash everything in hot water before you start sewing.
Layer two pieces of fabric, right sides together. Put a pre-fold on top. Pin together. I like to mark a spot that I will not sew, so that I can turn the fabric right side out after sewing.
Sew along the edge of the pre-fold. I used a serger. Remember to leave an opening for turning the burp cloth right side out.
A serger cuts off the excess fabric for you as you sew. If using a sewing machine, trim close to the seam and clip corners.
This shows the opening I left when sewing the layers together. You can also see that the print fabric has right sides together.
Turn right side out and press flat. Tuck the open edges in and press, then pin in place.
Check back in a few days for Part 2!
